Vitamin B Complex Supplements

Why Are Vitamin B Complex Supplements Necessary?

If you are concerned about your health, then you have probably heard about vitamin B complex supplements, and wondered whether they are for you.  There are several instances where vitamin B complex supplements may be a good idea, and in this article, we look at when you should consider them.

During pregnancy, your body needs far more nutrients than usual, including specific nutrients like folic acid (which is a B vitamin.)

If you do not get enough of these from your diet, then a vitamin B complex supplement may be a good idea, as there are certain cases where vitamin deficiency has been linked to birth defects, and developmental problems.

Poor Diet

Ideally, we should get all the vitamins and minerals that we need from our diet, however, if you do not, then vitamin B complex supplements may be necessary.

Consider your diet – does it contain lots of fresh fruit and vegetables, whole grains, fresh meat, fish or poultry and legumes?  If not, and you eat mainly processed or convenience foods, then this type of supplement is definitely a good idea.

Restrictive Diets

People on restrictive diets, such as vegans, vegetarians and raw foodists, for instance, may not be getting all the nutrients, vitamins, and minerals they need from their diet.  This is especially true of vitamin B12, which is only found in meat and meat products.

If you are eating a diet that restricts you to one type of food, then you should certainly consider adding a supplement of vitamin B complex to your diet, to make sure that you are getting enough.

Remember that vitamin B is water soluble, and as such, it is very hard to get too much – excess will simply be flushed out of your body harmlessly.  If you develop a deficiency, on the other hand, you will most certainly develop unpleasant symptoms, and it is worth being safe, rather than sorry.

Vitamin B Deficiency

If you are still wondering whether it is worth taking vitamin B complex supplements, consider the diseases that a vitamin B deficiency could possibly cause.  These include rickets, beriberi, amnesia or psychosis, pellagra, acne, forms of anemia, and even autoimmune diseases.

With so many potentially dangerous side effects of a shortage of B vitamins, it makes sense to make a supplement a part of your day.  One little tablet could be all it takes to prevent all this.
